Dinner conversations

About

There have been some interesting conversations over the past few years. They were philosophical and curious, yet directed and focused. These conversations have mostly been one on ones. And during a particularly beautiful sunset in Noordhoek, Julian and Leo decided that it would be interesting to try a similar format with a group of people. We tried to define what was different about these conversations when compared to the other chit chat that happens throughout life. It was hard to pin down, but we think that it is:
Β
πŸ’¬
A conversation that has pauses in it. Not because there is nothing to say, but because everyone is deeply thinking about what was just said. A conversation where where changing your mind is something to celebrate.

What it is

Simply a dinner with a conversation topic. Everyone will be informed to what the topic is before, and they will have time to think about it or do some research.

How it works

  1. A host’s house and date is selected for the dinner.
  1. The host chooses the topic.
  1. An email is sent out with the date, location and topic.

Manifesto

  1. Prioritise listening over speaking.
  1. Having your mind changed is something to celebrate.
  1. Debate over argument.

Guidelines

  1. Respect the speaker.
  1. Allow the conversation to go ebb and flow, but if the conversation strays far from the topic; bring it back.
  1. If your mind is changed - celebrate the fact.
